Following their last match before the winter break, the Meja Blue ‘99 Boys will begin a 6 week off season training regimen designed to target speed, agility and strength development. The program will target specific areas with individual players in order to maximize individual performance. There is a mood of excitement among the boys as they look to improve total athleticism. The program will include introductory plyometrics, light resistance training, and targeted work on explosive acceleration, strength and quickness.

“This is going to be hard, but we need it.” said Grant Dodgen. “Some of us need to get faster and some of us need to get stronger. It should help us win the ball better.”

The Meja ‘99 Boys Blue squad drove themselves to the top of the table with a decisive win over DFW Tornados on Saturday. Zach Patterson forcefully announced his return to form with 2 goals, while James Mach and Ryan Preston and Asahel Salgado joined forces to strangle the league’s third leading offense.

The match could not have started more ominously for the Blues, who were desperate to return to winning form after successive draws had seen them slide down the table. An early defensive error allowed the Tornados an easy opportunity on goal, and within the first 5 minutes the Blues found themselves trailing 1-0.

Indeed the circumstances looked bleak as the Blues were without regular stars Jack Bell, Jesus Mendoza and Zach Adams. Dangermen Patterson and Grant Dodgen were poorly recovered from their football playoffs that morning, and the absence of Mendoza drove starting left wing Norberto Garcia into a central midfield role. Still, the Blues are long on leadership and when it mattered most, they rose to the task.

Within moments of the opening goal, Garcia intercepted and errant Tornado pass. He quickly put Dodgen through on the right wing and the Meja captain found Patterson at the edge of the area. Fatigue or no, Patterson found the net with an excellent finish to bring the game level.

The goal seemed to settle the side, and as Garcia, Preston and Mach led the way the Blues began to clamp down and strangle the Tornados chances. Jake White and

Joel Herman tag teamed to help Asahel Salgado hold down the left side, while rookies Alex Mora and Cameron Harvey simply outran and outworked the Tornado attackers.

Patterson was again the source of trouble for the Tornados, as just before halftime his shot rebounded off the unlucky keeper into the path of Allan Sandoval, who bravely clattered home to put the Blues ahead. Patterson was not done, however, as he rounded out the day with a stunning individual breakaway

that proved to be the game winner.

The Blues inexperience in defense and the absence of Jack Bell finally caught up with them as the Tornados were able to pull back a goal 90 seconds from time. But it was too little and too late as the Blues ran out deserved winners.

The Blues still have a long road to the championship and their . Their only loss was to the Nationals, who are two points back but have 3 games in hand. Coach Oscar Gonzalez was reserved. “We played well today,” he said. “We have a long way to go still, but it is good to be playing well.”

Meja Blue ’99 is Kickin’ It for Breast Cancer Awareness month. For the month of October the team has challenge spectators, family and friends to donate $1.00 for every goal scored during the month of October, Breast Cancer Awareness month. In addition, the team will honor all Breast Cancer patients and survivors by wearing special pink jerseys for the remaining games instead of donning their usual blue jerseys. We want our players and those around us to be aware that Meja Soccer Club is not only about what’s on the field, but what’s off the field. Several of the MB99 player’s grandmothers and family friends are breast cancer survivors, and we wouldn’t be surprised if many on the sidelines have also been affected or influenced by someone dealing with breast cancer.

The new improved Meja 99 Boys began the 2009-2010 campaign at the Plano Premier Qualifying Tournament this weekend. Busy up until the roster deadline, head coach Oscar Gonzalez brought a completely rebuilt side into the new season. Only five starters remained from the group that started the spring season, but there was excitement in the air at the debut of several new up and coming stars.

Late signings Cameron Harvey and Alex Mora were thrust into battle right away as cover was needed for missing stars Jack Bell and James Mach. They were charged with containing one of the areas most dangerous attackers, former Meja Academy star Ryan Maso. The Meja boys looked to be on track when newcomer Jesus Mendoza opened the scoring against Maso’s new club, Plano based TFC. Maso was never going to be beaten that easily, however, and levelled the score within 2 minutes. The ensuing 45 minutes was full of hard fought football, crushing tackles and high tempo aggressive play. Both teams proved excellent in destroying the opposition attack, and few clear chances were created. With about 4 minutes to go, TFC got their break. Maso ran on to a loose ball and fought off the inexperienced Harvey to flash a floating left foot finish into the upper right corner of Nick Winkler’s goal. TFC ran down the time and staggered off deserved winners of a well fought contest.

The afternoon game saw the Meja boys face off against Necaxa. Gonzalez made several changes from the early game, looking for an effective combination the could propel his team forward. However the best laid plans are undone when the players have trouble staying focused, and the Meja boys showed the effects of a long hot day. The midfield which had been so hotly contested in the early game was now abandoned, and Necaxa seemed to control the game at will. The passing was late and inaccurate, the positioning was poor, and only strong efforts in the defense kept the scoreline within reach.

Still, lessons were learned. Newcomers Kyle Manning and Joel Herman came off the bench for extended periods and proved themselves capable of holding their own in the face of skilled, experienced competition. Asahel Salgado was rock solid at left back. Mora and another late signing Cesar Mateos proved a formidable combination in the defensive midfield. Justus Winkler shut down several waves of oncoming attack Grant Dodgen was inserted at right wing and played moderately well, immediately producing some badly needed width. The game belonged to Nick Winkler, however, who shone for the brilliant shot stopper he is. At the final whistle, a disappointed Meja group went off licking their wounds.

Sunday morning brought the weekend’s final contest against Titans FC. Sunday also saw the much welcomed return of Jack Bell, whose experience and intensive summer training program would soon show dividends. Throughout the first games, the Meja boys had been unable to effectively string together a cohesive set of passes. A quick goal from Zach Patterson set them off to a good start, but the passing still eluded them. The boys enjoyed effective attacks down the flanks, driven by the play of Dodgen and left winger Norberto Garcia. However positional discipline was also a consistent problem, with Mendoza taking his role as free flowing playmaker a little too far. The defense was stellar again, and the Titans were without a clear scoring chance until Winkler carried the ball out of his box. They converted the resulting free kick to level the score going into the break.

Gonzalez finally found his winning formula midway during the second half. A quick swap of Bell to center midfield and Mendoza to defensive midfield unlocked the offense and sent the Blues surging forward. Dodgen, fully at home in his new position, continued his marauding runs up the right side while Garcia and Patterson sliced through the left. Mendoza, Mora, and Jake White ruthlessly destroyed any semblance of Titan attack.

The key breakthrough came when Mendoza won the ball in his defensive third and lofted a beautiful pass up the right sideline to Dodgen, who chested it forward down the line past Titan left back Gavin Elliot. Dodgen then found the streaking Garcia, whose rebounded shot was cooly finished by the ever dangerous Patterson. Bouyed by their success, the Blues began to run rampant. Within minutes they were in the Titan area again, this time Dodgen’s cross barely missing Garcia, but quickly retrieved by Patterson who deftly pumped it back in front of goal and onto Dodgen’s head. From 4 yards the winger could made no mistake and sealed the Blues victory, 3-1.

The MEJA Girls ‘99 qualified for Division 1 in the Lake Highlands Girls Classic League tonight with a win over Texas Blitz Black at UT-D. The MEJA girls entered the LHGCL Qualifying Tournament ranked 22nd among a competitive field. The girls played well in the first weekend of the tournament but it wasn’t enough and they had to continue the battle into Round 2 of qualifiers. Success came this evening as they won their bracket with 3 wins and no losses. The team has been working hard over the summer, practicing three times a week and it showed at this Tournament. They will be taking the week off to recoup and hit it hard next week in preparation for a very competitive LHGCL season.
